Root Canals
Teeth have several layers. The outside layer of the tooth is composed of a hard layer called enamel. Under the enamel another layer called dentin, which has at its center the pulp which has blood vessels, nerves. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums.
During the root canal procedure the dentist removes the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the canal system and then seals the root of the tooth. Although the pulp is important during development of the tooth, it is not necessary for function of the tooth. The tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it even after the pulp is removed.
